Embroidery puts the needle through the fabric very densely. Without a backing the material would draw together and the design would look distorted. That is exactly what stabilisers and backing aids prevent.

Which backing is right depends on the fabric. Firm wovens need less support than stretchy knits, because they hardly distort anyway. For jersey and sweatshirting the rule is: the stretchier the fabric, the firmer the backing has to be.

Besides the backing, hooping matters. Fabric and stabiliser belong in the frame together, flat but without tension. Anyone who stretches the fabric gets ripples after stitching, as soon as the material relaxes again.

Spray adhesive helps when a piece is hard to hoop. It holds the stabiliser in place so collars, pockets or finished garments sit securely without pinning.

Why does my embroidery pucker?

Usually the stabiliser is missing or too light for the fabric. Fabric hooped too tightly is another common cause, because it relaxes after stitching and forms ripples.

How do I hoop fabric and stabiliser correctly?

Place both in the frame together, smooth them out and tighten only enough that nothing sags. Do not pull the fabric taut, or the design distorts once the hoop is released.

What do I need spray adhesive for?

To hold stabiliser and fabric together when a piece cannot be hooped – collars, pockets or finished garments for instance. The adhesive holds until the design is stitched.
