Unlike heavy tarpaulin fabrics these qualities stay soft and rustle very little. That matters especially for children's clothing, because stiff fabrics are uncomfortable to wear and restrict movement.

When sewing, make as few needle holes as possible, since every hole is a place where water can enter. Fabric clips instead of pins, a longer stitch and a teflon foot make the work easier. If you need genuinely tight seams, seal them additionally with seam tape.

One practical note on sizing: rainwear is worn over other clothing, so it may well be cut generously. Allow enough room across the shoulders and hips, otherwise the jacket pulls over a jumper.

How do I get watertight seams?

Use an iron-on seam tape that closes the stitch holes from the inside. Without that seal a seam always remains a weak point, even if the fabric itself lets no water through.

Why use fabric clips instead of pins?

Because every pin leaves a hole that stays in the finished garment. Clips hold the layers just as well without damaging the surface.

Is the fabric suitable for puddle suits?

Yes, that is one of its typical uses. Look out for reinforced knees and elastic at the ankles and waist so that neither water nor sand can get in.
