Whether you reach for a pin or a clip depends on the fabric. Pins are enough for most projects, but with coated materials or thick layers fabric clips are the better choice – they hold firmly without leaving holes.

Machine needles exist for every task: universal needles for wovens, jersey needles with a rounded tip for knits, denim needles for thick layers and embroidery needles with a large eye. The right needle prevents skipped stitches and damaged fabric.
Pins hold layers together before sewing. Glass head pins tolerate heat and do not melt if you iron over them by accident. Fine pins suit thin fabrics, sturdy ones thick fabrics.
Fabric clips are the alternative for anything that must not be pierced: faux leather, film, oilcloth and cork. They also grip several thick layers and can be opened with one hand.

With materials where holes remain visible: faux leather, cork, film and oilcloth. Clips are also more practical with very thick layers, where a pin barely goes through.
How often do I need to change the machine needle?
As a guide after a few hours of sewing, or at the latest when the stitching becomes untidy, stitches are skipped or a knocking sound appears. A blunt needle damages the fabric.
Which needle for which fabric?
