Stability matters most: a fabric that stretches easily goes baggy at the knees and seat. Firm woven cloth with little give holds its shape through the day, while a small amount of elastane still makes it comfortable.

For the waistband and pocket bags you also need interfacing and possibly lining fabric. Both are listed under interfacing and lining fabrics – with the right supplies the waistband sits cleanly.

Sew stress points such as pocket corners and the crotch seam with a bar tack or twice over. That is where the greatest force acts while wearing, and a single seam tears there first.

Which fabric is suitable for trousers?

A firm woven fabric that hardly stretches, or a quality with a little elastane for more comfort. Fabrics that are too soft go baggy at the knees and seat and lose their shape quickly.

Does the waistband need interfacing?

In most cases yes. Interfacing stops the waistband from rippling or folding over as you wear it. Choose a weight that matches the outer fabric, otherwise the waistband feels too stiff.

How do I stop pockets from tearing out?

Secure the corners with a bar tack, a dense zigzag over a short distance. Alternatively sew back and forth over the spot several times; both spread the strain across more fabric.
