Cords close drawstring bags, hold hoods in shape and serve as straps. Alongside them you will find cord ends, stoppers and eyelets that keep the drawstring channel neat and stop it from fraying.

The thickness of the cord determines the effect: thin cords suit narrow channels on drawstring bags, thicker ones work on hoodies and jackets. Flat cords sit wider and are popular on bags.

It is important that cord and eyelet match. The eyelet has to be large enough for the cord to slide through easily, but not so large that the channel frays. It is best to buy both together.

Cord ends and stoppers keep the cord from disappearing into the channel and give the end some weight. To stop synthetic cord from unravelling, melt the end briefly or bind it with thread.

Good to know

Which cord thickness suits my project?

Thin cords for drawstring bags and narrow channels, thicker ones for hoodies and jackets. What matters is that the cord fits through the eyelet and still slides easily inside the channel.

How do I stop the cord from fraying?

With synthetic fibres melt the end briefly, with natural fibres bind it with thread or fit a cord end. Both hold the fibres together and look neater.

Do I need eyelets for a drawstring channel?

They are not essential, but they stop the fabric from tearing where the cord passes through. On frequently used bags and hoods the reinforcement is worthwhile.
