Skeins of six strands are usual. For fine outlines take one or two, for filled stitches four to six. Separate the strands individually and lay them back together smoothly, then the stitch sits more evenly.

Do not cut pieces that are too long: about an arm's length is enough. Longer threads twist while stitching, knot more easily and wear out from being pulled through repeatedly.

For even results an embroidery hoop that tensions the fabric is worthwhile. Combined with the right needle – blunt for counted work, pointed for free designs – the stitching becomes noticeably more regular.

How many strands should I use?

One or two for fine lines, four to six for filled stitches. Try it on a scrap to see how strong the result looks before starting on the actual design.

How long should the thread be?

About an arm's length. Longer threads twist while stitching and knot more easily; the thread also wears if it is pulled through the fabric too often.

Which needle suits embroidery thread?

A needle with a large eye so several strands fit through. For counted work use blunt needles that slide between the woven threads, for free designs pointed ones.
