Iron-on motifs have an adhesive backing. They are applied with heat and pressure, ideally from both sides and with a cloth in between. Hold the iron still rather than gliding it.

For clothing that is washed often, stitching them down as well is advisable. The adhesive does hold, but the edges lift over time – a seam all round prevents that permanently.

On stretchy fabrics appliqué needs a light touch: a firm motif makes the area stiff. Smaller motifs and soft materials cope with the stretch better than large, rigid areas.

Does an iron-on motif hold permanently?

Applied correctly it lasts a long time, but the edges lift over the years. On clothing that is washed frequently you should stitch the motif down with a close zigzag as well.

Can I apply appliqué to jersey?

Yes, with care. The motif makes the area less stretchy, so it should not be too large and should not sit where the fabric is stretched heavily, at a cuff for instance.

How do I cover a hole with a patch?

Place the patch so it covers the hole generously and reinforce the area from the inside with a piece of interfacing. Then the damaged fabric does not carry the strain alone.
