The difference from a round cord is how it feels. A flat cord spreads the pull across its whole width instead of digging into the hand like a string – noticeable above all when it is pulled often.

Visually it is a different decision too: it sits visibly on the garment and works as a design element, where a thin cord tends to disappear.

The channel has to be correspondingly wide. Allow at least twice the tape width, or the cord twists while threading and no longer lies flat.

A safety pin or bodkin works for threading. The ends fray; with synthetic fibre a brief touch of flame is enough, with cotton a folded and stitched end.

How wide does the channel need to be?

At least twice the tape width, so around four centimetres. If the channel is too narrow the cord twists while threading and will not lie flat afterwards.

Does the cord twist when worn?

Hardly, if the channel is wide enough. While threading it helps to guide the tape flat with a safety pin and check now and then that it still lies correctly.

Does flat cord fit through eyelet patches?

Only through large, rectangular openings. Round eyelets are made for cords; a twenty millimetre tape buckles inside and looks untidy afterwards.
