A sewing project rarely needs fabric alone. Thread, a fastening, perhaps some interfacing and a few tools usually come with it, and that is exactly where things stall when the missing part is noticed at eight in the evening. This is why the range here is sorted by task rather than by brand.
For joining and fastening you will find thread, zips, buttons, rivets, hook-and-loop tape, snap pliers and eyelets; for shaping and stabilising there are interfacings, waddings and stuffing; for cutting, scissors, rotary cutters and cutting mats; for measuring and marking, tape measures, chalk and pens. Trims such as braids, ribbons, cords and lace complete the range, together with bag hardware and books full of instructions.
One tip that saves a lot of frustration: buy supplies together with the fabric. Thread colour, zip length and interfacing weight all depend on the material, and an interfacing meant for thin cotton will leave a firm bag fabric stiff and unusable.

Which thread suits which fabric?
A good all-purpose polyester thread covers most projects; it has slight give and works on wovens as well as knits. Choose a finer thread for very light fabrics and a stronger one for denim or bags. What matters more than the brand is that upper and bobbin thread match.
Which scissors do I need for sewing?
A sharp pair of fabric scissors used for fabric only, because paper blunts the blade. Small thread snips are a useful addition, as is a rotary cutter with a cutting mat, especially along straight edges and on slippery materials.
What is interfacing for?
Interfacing gives fabric body and shape. It stabilises collars, button bands and bag panels, or reinforces thin materials. Fusible versions are the easiest to work with. The decisive point is matching the weight of the interfacing to the fabric, otherwise the piece turns stiff.
Which zip length should I choose?
The length is given in your pattern and is measured along the teeth. Separating zips are needed for jackets, closed-end zips for skirts, trousers and bags. When in doubt take a slightly longer one and shorten it at the top end.
What belongs in a basic kit?
Fabric scissors, pins or clips, a tape measure, a seam ripper, a marking pen, all-purpose thread and the right needles for your machine. That covers most projects. Everything else follows over time from the patterns you actually sew.
