The printed grid helps with straight cutting: you can align fabric edges to it and read measurements directly without reaching for a ruler every time. Angle markings make cutting on the bias easier.

The size depends on your space and your projects: small mats are enough for cutting pieces and patchwork, large ones make working with fabric by the metre easier because the fabric does not have to be moved constantly.

Store the mat flat and protect it from heat. Rolled up or left in the sun the material warps permanently, and a wavy mat can hardly be used cleanly any more.

What does self healing mean?

The surface is made of a material whose cut marks close again. The mat therefore stays smooth instead of developing grooves over time in which the blade would later catch.

Which size do I need?

For patchwork and small pieces a small mat is enough. Anyone cutting fabric by the metre should choose a larger one, as otherwise the fabric has to be shifted constantly and the cut becomes inaccurate.

How should I store a cutting mat?

Lying flat and away from direct heat. Rolled up or in the sun the mat deforms permanently; a wavy surface stops the blade from running cleanly.
