Embroidery pulls the needle through the fabric very densely. Without support, stretchy material would draw together and the design would look distorted. The answer is a stabiliser, and the right one depends on the fabric: tear-away types suit firm wovens, cut-away types suit jersey and sweatshirt fabric because they stay under the design permanently. Self adhesive stabilisers help with pieces that are hard to hoop, such as collars or finished bags.

Wash-away stabilisers go one step further. They disappear without a trace in water and are used wherever nothing may remain: on towelling as a topping against the loops, or for lace designs that have to stand on their own. Spray adhesive fixes the stabiliser in place so you do not have to pin.

For hand embroidery we stock hoops, needles with and without a point, and embroidery threads; embroidery felt is the base for appliqué and patches. Machine thread has more sheen and is built for high speed, while thread for hand work can be separated into single strands.

Which stabiliser do I need for jersey?

For stretchy fabrics such as jersey or sweatshirting, choose a cut-away stabiliser. It stays under the design after stitching and holds the loops in shape permanently. Tear-away types would be too weak here, because the fabric gives way again once they are removed.

Can I embroider with an ordinary sewing machine?

Free motion embroidery works on many household machines if the feed dogs can be lowered. For designs stitched automatically you need an embroidery machine or an embroidery module. The supplies here suit both routes.

What is wash-away stabiliser for?

It is used wherever no residue may remain. On towelling or plush it is placed on top so the stitches do not sink into the loops. After stitching you simply rinse it out and the design stands on its own.

Which needle should I use for embroidery?

Machine embroidery needles have a larger eye and a slightly rounded point, which protects the thread and the fabric. For hand embroidery the choice depends on the thread: blunt needles for counted work, pointed ones for free designs.

Why does my embroidery pucker?

Usually the stabiliser is missing or too light, and sometimes the fabric is hooped too loosely. Hoop fabric and stabiliser together so they lie flat but without tension, and pick a stabiliser that matches the weight of the material.
