Embroidery felt and 3D foam for appliqué

Embroidery felt is the base for patches and appliqué: it does not fray and keeps its shape even when a design is densely stitched. With the 3D foam Puffy, lettering and logos stand out from the fabric in relief.

Dense stitching puts a lot of strain on the ground fabric. A woven cloth would draw together; felt, made of compressed fibres with no grain, stays flat and stable instead.

The edges need no finishing. You can cut out the finished design directly – either close to the stitched border or with a narrow margin left standing as a frame.

The finished patch is attached with a close zigzag or by hand with back stitches. On clothing that is washed often, stitching holds far better than glue.

For raised effects there is also Sulky Puffy: the 3 mm foam is laid beneath the design and lifts lettering, outlines and logos noticeably off the fabric as they are stitched over.

Frequently asked questions

Why felt rather than fabric as a base?

Because felt does not fray and barely distorts under dense stitching. Woven fabric draws together under the stitch density, while felt stays flat and keeps its shape.

Do I have to finish the edges?

No. The cut edge stays closed, so you can cut out the design directly. A narrow margin around the stitching often looks like a deliberately placed frame.

How do I attach a finished patch?

With a close zigzag by machine or by hand with dense stitches. Glue holds in the short term but lifts at the edges on clothing after a few washes.

What do I need 3D foam for?

For raised embroidery: Sulky Puffy is laid beneath the design, not hooped. As it is stitched over, it lifts lettering, outlines and logos noticeably off the fabric.
