For a start, volumes with a thorough stitch guide are ideal. They explain step by step how stem stitch, satin stitch or French knots are worked, and show what each stitch is suited to.

Other books focus on motifs and templates. There you will find finished designs to transfer, often with colour suggestions and notes on how many strands to use.

For machine embroidery the subject is less about stitches than preparation: stabilisers, hooping and file formats. Books in this area explain the technique and help avoid typical mistakes such as distorted designs.

Which book is good for starting out?

One with a thorough stitch guide and plenty of photographs. Holding the needle and guiding the thread are easier to show than to describe, so step by step images help a great deal.

Are templates included in the books?

In many volumes yes, sometimes for tracing, sometimes as transfer sheets. Whether and in what form templates are included is stated in the description of each book.

Are there books on machine embroidery?

Yes. These deal less with individual stitches than with preparation: which stabiliser suits which fabric, how to hoop correctly and how to place designs cleanly.
