Children's clothes are moved about a lot and washed often. Choose fabrics that cope with both: jersey and sweatshirting are stretchy and easy care, firm wovens suit skirts, trousers and jackets.

As children grow quickly, adjustable details are worth considering. Cuffs at sleeves and legs can be turned up, and elastic in the waistband makes up a few centimetres.

Sew stress points such as knees, pockets and crotch seams twice. That is where children's clothes give way first, and a second row of stitching takes only a few minutes.

Which size should I sew for a child?

Measure height and chest and follow the size chart of the pattern. When in doubt sew one size larger – children grow quickly, and cuffs can be turned up in the meantime.

Which fabrics suit children's clothes?

Stretchy knits such as jersey and french terry for shirts and trousers, firm wovens for skirts and jackets. What matters is that the fabric is washable and feels pleasant against the skin.

How do I make children's clothes last longer?

Sew knees, pocket corners and crotch seams twice or secure them with a bar tack. Those areas take the most strain and are the first to tear with a single seam.
