Because knit fabric is made of loops, it gives way in every direction and drapes more softly than woven cloth. Chunky qualities look rustic and warm, fine knits cling gently and suit dresses and tops.

When cutting, let the fabric lie flat and do not pull it, otherwise the pieces distort. Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch; an overlocker finishes the edge in the same pass.

Chunky knits fray at the cut edges and should be finished promptly. With very loose qualities a narrow stay tape in the shoulder and neckline seam helps to stop the garment from stretching out over time.

Does knit fabric fray?

Chunky qualities do, fine ones hardly at all. Finish the edges soon after cutting, ideally with an overlocker or a zigzag stitch, otherwise the loops come undone along the edge.

How do I stop the garment from stretching out?

Sew a narrow stay tape into the shoulder and neckline seam. It takes the strain and holds the seam in shape while the rest of the fabric can still give way.

Which needle do I need for knit fabric?

A jersey needle with a rounded tip that slides between the loops. A sharp universal needle would cut individual yarns, which can cause ladders in knitted fabric.
