The characteristic handle comes from densely woven, smooth yarns. They give the fabric body but also make it rustle softly as you move – an effect that is often deliberately wanted in costumes.

Because taffeta has almost no give, every seam shows clearly. Work carefully and press the seams open, but only at a moderate temperature and with a cloth in between so no shiny marks appear.

Cut edges fray heavily and should be finished immediately. Needle marks remain visible, so place pins exclusively in the seam allowance.

Why does taffeta rustle?

The densely woven, smooth yarns rub against each other as you move. That rustle is part of the material and cannot be washed out – usually welcome in costumes, less so in everyday clothing.

Does taffeta fray badly?

Yes, noticeably. Finish the edges straight after cutting with an overlocker or zigzag, otherwise threads come away while you sew and the seam allowance ends up narrower than planned.

How do I press taffeta?

At a moderate temperature, from the wrong side and with a pressing cloth. Too much heat creates shiny marks that cannot be removed and can permanently change the surface.
