The high elastane content means the fabric fits closely again even after heavy stretching. That is crucial for swimwear, as wet fabric otherwise stretches out and loses its fit.

For sewing you need a stretch stitch or an overlocker. A straight stitch snaps as soon as the fabric is stretched. For leg openings and straps, elastic sewn in holds the edge.

Chlorine and salt water attack elastane. Rinse finished pieces in cold water after swimming and dry them in the shade, and the elasticity lasts longer.

Which stitch do I need for swim fabrics?

An elastic one: narrow zigzag, stretch stitch or overlocker. A straight stitch breaks when stretched, because the thread cannot follow.

How do I attach elastic to leg openings?

Sew it on slightly stretched with zigzag onto the seam allowance, fold the edge over and topstitch with a twin needle or zigzag. The edge then stays elastic and lies flat.

How do I care for swimwear?

Rinse in cold water after swimming, do not wring and dry in the shade. Chlorine, salt and sun attack the elastic fibres and make the fabric stretch out faster.
