A trim turns a plain hem into a highlight. Whether pompoms on a cushion, jacquard braid on a bag or beads on an occasion dress – sewn or ironed on, a trim changes the character of a piece at once.

Sew-on trims are attached with a straight stitch, as close to both edges as possible so they lie flat. With pompom trim the tape is stitched down while the pompoms stand free beyond the hem.
Iron-on trims have an adhesive backing and can be applied without stitching. That is quick, but holds less firmly than a seam – for clothing that is washed often you should stitch them as well.
Allow generously for length: corners and curves need more trim than the plain edge measurement suggests. A small extra amount prevents running short at the end.

How do I sew a trim on neatly?
Pin or clip the trim in place first, then sew with a straight stitch close along both long edges. That way it lies flat and does not ripple later, not even after washing.
Do iron-on trims hold permanently?
For decoration and rarely washed items, yes. On clothing that goes into the machine regularly you should stitch the trim as well, because the adhesive loosens over time.
How much trim do I need?
Measure the edge and add an allowance, particularly for corners and curves. More material is used there, and a piece cut too short can rarely be extended without it showing.
