The pile is what makes the material appealing – and what makes cutting more work. Cut only the backing from the reverse side, not through the pile. That way the hairs stay standing and the seam disappears among them later.

Plush sheds a lot of lint while sewing, so it helps to have a vacuum cleaner within reach. The layers shift easily because the pile slides: tacking or a walking foot solves this. After sewing you can gently pull trapped hairs out of the seam with a needle.

How do I cut plush correctly?

Place the fabric with the reverse facing up and cut only the backing, ideally with small scissors in short movements. The pile stays standing and hides the seam line afterwards.

Do I have to consider the direction of the pile?

Yes. The pile lies in one direction and looks darker from above than from below. Cut all pieces facing the same way, otherwise the finished soft toy looks patchy.

Which filling suits soft toys made of plush?

Washable polyester filling is the usual choice because it is light and keeps its shape. Add it in small portions and push it into arms, legs and ears with a stick.
