Webbing is the workhorse among tapes: it carries bags, rucksacks and belts and takes a lot of strain. The width matters most, as it has to match buckles and clips.
Twill tape is used for binding and reinforcing, for example in shoulder seams where it stops the seam from stretching. Piping cord sits between two layers of fabric and gives cushions and bags a crisp, defined edge.
Decorative tapes such as fringe and glitter trims are stitched on and add accents to hems, bags and cushions. Sew them with a straight stitch as close to the edge as possible, then the tape lies flat and does not ripple.

Which webbing width do I need?
That depends on the hardware: buckles, clips and rings are made for fixed widths. Measure the hardware or buy tape and fastener together, then the two are sure to match.
What is twill tape used for?
For reinforcing and binding. In shoulder and neckline seams it keeps the seam in shape so the garment does not stretch out. It also works well for binding edges on bags and totes.
How do I sew piping neatly?
Place it between the two layers of fabric so only the cord shows, and sew along the piping with a zip foot. That keeps the distance even and gives a clean edge.
