Grosgrain ribbon is recognised by its fine crosswise rib. It is firmer than satin ribbon, holds its shape and creases cleanly – which is why it is used for hair accessories, lanyards, bag handles and packaging.

The rib comes from thicker weft threads. It gives the ribbon body, so a bow keeps its shape instead of collapsing.

Printed grosgrain is popular for hair accessories, because print adheres well to the ribbed surface. Take care not to stretch the ribbon while sewing, or the motif distorts.

The ends fray less than satin but should still be sealed or hemmed. With polyester, a brief touch of flame is enough.

Because the ribbon barely gives, it also works as reinforcement: sewn into a bag edge or a handle it takes the strain and stops the fabric stretching out.

How does grosgrain differ from satin ribbon?

Grosgrain is ribbed, matt and firm, satin is smooth, lustrous and softer. For bows with body choose grosgrain, for flowing ribbons satin.

Is grosgrain suitable for lanyards?

Yes, it is hard wearing and does not cut in. For heavy key bunches choose a wider quality or fold the ribbon double.

How do I seal the ends?

With polyester, melt briefly with a flame; with cotton, fold over and stitch. Alternatively a drop of fabric glue on the cut edge does the job.
