Gobelin

In gobelin the pattern is not printed but woven in. That gives the fabric a three dimensional look and keeps the design crisp after many washes. It is firm, heavy and suits bags, cushions and decoration.

Because the motifs are made from coloured threads, the reverse is usually a mirror image of the face. The pattern therefore cannot flake off or fade like a print – a clear advantage for items that are used a lot.

The weight makes gobelin particularly stable. Bags stand up on their own, cushions keep their shape and seat covers wear slowly. For clothing the fabric is usually too heavy and too stiff.

Sew with a strong needle and a longer stitch. The cut edges fray noticeably, so finish them promptly with an overlocker or zigzag.

What makes gobelin different from printed fabric?

The pattern is created during weaving from coloured threads rather than by colour on the surface. That gives it depth, means it cannot flake off and keeps it clearly visible after many washes.

Is gobelin suitable for clothing?

Only to a limited extent. The fabric is heavy and stiff, which is welcome in bags and cushions but uncomfortable in clothing. For waistcoats or structured jackets it can still work.

Does gobelin fray?

Yes, noticeably at the cut edges. Finish them straight after cutting, otherwise threads come loose and the seam allowance ends up narrower than planned.
