Embroidery thread is designed for the high speed of an embroidery machine. It has to shine, resist breaking and must not bleed in the wash – qualities ordinary sewing thread does not offer.

The sheen comes from smooth, continuous filaments. They reflect light evenly, which makes stitched areas look three dimensional. Sewing thread is duller and thicker, leaving stitch patterns looking flat.
The most common weight is no. 40. Finer threads suit small lettering and detail, heavier ones bold outlines. Metallic and effect threads add extra shine but need a slower machine setting.
For the bobbin, a thinner speciality thread is usually used. It adds less bulk, so the reverse stays flat and the design does not turn stiff.

Can I use ordinary sewing thread for embroidery?
Technically yes, but the result rarely convinces. Sewing thread is duller and thicker; it also breaks more often at high embroidery speeds, because it is twisted differently.
Which thread weight do I need?
No. 40 is the standard and suits almost every design. For very small lettering and fine detail a thinner thread is better, as the stitches otherwise run into each other.
Why does my metallic thread keep breaking?
Metallic threads tolerate less tension and speed. Reduce the pace, lower the thread tension slightly and use a metallic needle with a larger eye.
