Sommersweat / French Terry ungeraut
French terry is smooth on the outside and shows fine loops on the inside. As it is not brushed, it keeps you less warm than winter sweatshirting and can be worn almost all year – the standard fabric for jumpers, hoodies and children's clothes.
- Loopback inside
- Stretchy
- All year round

French terry is a knitted fabric like jersey, only thicker. The loops on the reverse make it soft against the skin without adding bulk. It stretches across the width and still holds its shape well enough for sweatshirts, jackets, dresses and trousers.
The range is sorted by look: plain for combining and for cuff areas, stripes and prints for the main pieces, panels as pre-printed sections with a finished motif. Matching cuffing is listed under Bündchenstoff, mostly in the same colours so everything can be combined cleanly.
Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. Because french terry is thicker than jersey, a slightly longer stitch works better; at bulky spots it helps to sew slowly and reduce the presser foot pressure.
Good to know
What is the difference to winter sweatshirting?
Winter sweatshirting is brushed on the reverse, and the raised surface holds warmth. French terry stays unbrushed and shows the loops openly. That makes it lighter and comfortable in spring and autumn as well.
Which cuffing suits french terry?
Fine rib cuffing in the same colour is the classic choice. It is more elastic than the terry itself and gathers sleeves, hem and neckline neatly. For wide waistbands a coarse rib works better.
How much fabric do I need for a jumper?
That depends on size and pattern and is always stated in the sewing pattern. Allow a little extra if the fabric has a one way design, because all pieces then have to be cut facing the same direction.
