Classic buttons are sewn on and need a buttonhole. Snap fasteners, by contrast, are set with pliers and hold without stitching – practical on jersey and children's clothes, where a neat buttonhole is hard to sew.

Jersey snaps are a construction of their own: instead of sharp prongs they grip across a surface so stretchy knits do not tear. Snap tape provides a whole row at once and suits bodysuits and bed linen.

Rivets are mainly there to reinforce: at pocket corners and strap ends they absorb strain that would otherwise pull on the seam. Metal buttons and rivets need the right tool, usually snap pliers or a setting tool.

When should I use snaps instead of buttons?

When a buttonhole is difficult or things need to be quick, for instance on jersey, baby clothes and bodysuits. Snaps hold without stitching, open easily and can be managed even by small children.

What is special about jersey snaps?

They grip across a surface rather than with prongs and therefore do not damage the loops. In stretchy fabrics a pronged snap would tear out over time as the fabric gives way.

What do I need rivets for?

To reinforce places that are pulled on: pocket corners, strap ends or webbing attachments. The rivet spreads the force over a larger area so the seam does not tear out.
