Snaps

Snaps are plastic press studs set with pliers. They do not rust, come in many colours and hold firmly – the first choice on children's clothes, lingerie, bibs and bags.

Compared with metal press studs they have two advantages: they do not rust and can be matched in colour to the fabric. That makes them ideal for baby clothes and anything washed often.

They are set with snap pliers or a setting tool. Four parts belong together: two for the top and two for the underside – take care to combine the correct halves.

Practise on a scrap of the same layers. Pressed too lightly the snap comes apart; pressed too hard the plastic pin breaks and the stud no longer holds.

On thin fabric, reinforce the spot. Without reinforcement the snap tears a hole in the fabric over time as it is opened.

Frequently asked questions

Which tool do I need for snaps?

Snap pliers or a setting tool with matching dies. The dies are sized to the snaps; with the wrong ones the stud sits crooked or breaks.

Why does my snap not hold?

Usually it was pressed too lightly or the fabric layer is too thin. Test the pressure on a scrap and reinforce thin spots with interfacing.

Are snaps safe for baby clothes?

Yes, when set correctly. They do not rust and have no sharp edges. After setting, check that both parts are firm and cannot be pulled off.
