Chenille

Chenille takes its name from the French word for caterpillar: the yarns are covered with short fibres all round, which makes them feel velvety soft. The fabric is warm and snug and popular for blankets, cushions, jackets and soft toys.

The surface stands away slightly and catches the light, which gives chenille a rich, high quality look. At the same time the material feels pleasant against the skin and is noticeably warmer than smooth cotton – ideal for anything you make yourself comfortable in.

Chenille sheds while cutting and the cut edges release fibres. Finish them promptly with an overlocker or zigzag. As with other pile fabrics the surface lies in one direction: cut all pieces facing the same way so the colour looks even throughout.

Is chenille stretchy?

That depends on the construction. Woven qualities hardly stretch, knitted ones give way across the width. Check the fabric before cutting, because patterns for knits rely on that stretch.

How do I care for chenille?

Wash inside out at a low temperature so the surface stays soft. Fabric softener is not needed and tends to flatten the fibres. When in doubt, follow the information given with the article.

Is chenille suitable for soft toys?

Yes, the soft surface is made for it. For toys intended for small children make sure no fibres come loose, and sew the seams twice so the filling stays safely enclosed.
