Satin is not a fibre but a weave: the threads lie long on the surface, which creates the smooth, shiny face. It is used for dresses, blouses, costumes, decoration and as a lining fabric.

The long float of the threads makes satin delicate: it snags easily on rough edges. In return it glides beautifully, which is why it has proved itself as a lining in jackets and skirts – the garment is easier to put on.

For sewing you need a fine, sharp needle and fine thread. Place pins only in the seam allowance, as the holes can remain visible. The fabric likes to slip: cutting on a non slip surface and tacking before sewing save a lot of trouble.

Why does satin snag so easily?

Because the threads lie long on the surface and are barely bound in. If the fabric catches on a rough spot, a thread is pulled out. Work with smooth hands, fine needles and clean tools.

Is satin suitable as a lining?

Very much so. The smooth surface glides over other garments, which makes jackets and skirts easier to put on. The lining also stops the outer fabric from clinging to the clothes underneath.

How do I press satin?

At a low temperature and from the wrong side, ideally with a cloth in between. Too much heat dulls the surface or leaves shiny pressure marks that cannot be removed afterwards.
