Softshell is the fabric for a transitional jacket. Several bonded layers make it windproof and water repellent, while the brushed inner face keeps you warm – available plain and printed.

The construction explains the properties: a dense outer weave that blocks wind and lets water bead off, and a soft fleece inside that keeps you warm. Both layers are bonded, which is why the fabric does not fray at the cut edge.
That saves work: edges need no finishing and seams stay flatter than on a lined jacket. In return, needle marks stay visible – work with clips instead of pins and baste at most within the seam allowance.
Softshell is not waterproof. Light rain beads off, but in prolonged heavy rain water comes through the seams. For genuine waterproofing you need rainwear fabric with taped seams.
Press at most from the reverse at low temperature, as membrane and bonding do not tolerate heat. For sewing, a universal needle in size 90 and a slightly longer stitch are usually enough.

Is softshell waterproof?
No, water repellent. Drops bead up and can be shaken off, but in continuous rain water comes through the seams. A jacket only becomes waterproof with taped seams.
Do I need to finish the edges?
No. The bonded layers hold the cut edge together and it does not fray. You can leave the edge raw or topstitch it for a neat look.
Which needle and stitch suit it?
A universal needle in size 90 and a longer stitch. For thick qualities or several layers a jeans needle is safer, as it penetrates the bonded layers better.
