Fleece keeps you warm, weighs very little and dries quickly. As the cut edges do not fray, nothing has to be finished – which makes it a rewarding fabric for quick projects such as jackets, blankets, hats and children's clothes.

Fleece is made of polyester and is brushed on both sides after knitting. The resulting layer of fibres traps air and keeps you noticeably warm without being heavy. It absorbs very little moisture and therefore dries fast.
Antipilling fleece is finished so that fewer bobbles form, and premium qualities perform even better. Cuddle fleece is especially soft and fluffy, minky fleece has a short velvety surface and is popular for baby blankets and soft toys. Sew with a universal needle and a slightly longer stitch; a walking foot stops the layers from shifting.

Do I have to finish the edges of fleece?
No. Fleece is a polyester knit whose edges do not fray. You can leave seams and edges raw or simply fold and topstitch them, which saves time and adds less bulk.
Why do bobbles form on fleece?
Friction loosens individual fibres which then mat into small balls. An antipilling finish reduces this considerably. Washing inside out, without softener and at a low temperature keeps the surface smooth for longer.
Is fleece suitable for baby blankets?
Yes, minky and cuddle fleece in particular. Both are soft, light and warm. Take care not to make the blanket too large and finish or bind the edges neatly.
