In machine embroidery the thread passes through the eye thousands of times. An eye that is too tight roughens the thread until it breaks. Embroidery needles are therefore designed for lower friction than universal needles.

The size depends on fabric and thread: for fine fabrics and thin thread choose a smaller size, for dense designs and heavier threads a larger one. Metallic threads need their own needle with a particularly smooth eye.

Hand embroidery calls for different needles: they have a long eye for stranded thread and, depending on the technique, a sharp or blunt point.

Why do I need a separate needle for embroidery?

Because the thread passes through the eye with every stitch, heating up and roughening. A larger, smoother eye lowers friction and prevents thread breaks.

When should I change the embroidery needle?

At the latest when threads break more often, stitches are skipped or the stitch pattern turns untidy. As a guide, change after several larger projects.

Which needle do I use for hand embroidery?

One with a long eye so stranded thread passes through. For fabrics with clear holes, such as Aida, a blunt point works best, as it does not split the threads.
