The open structure is what defines it: part of the surface is air, which is why lace is almost always placed over an underlayer. Only then does the contrast appear that makes the pattern visible.

Many laces have a scalloped edge. You can use it as a finished hem instead of turning the fabric under – that saves work and looks neater.

For sewing, a fine needle and a slightly shorter stitch are recommended. Because the structure is irregular, lace forgives small inaccuracies – but always cut the pieces so the pattern continues sensibly across the seams.

Do I need an underlayer beneath lace?

In most cases yes, because the pattern only shows against a calm background and lace alone is not opaque. Smooth, light qualities in a skin tone or a contrast colour work well underneath.

How do I finish the edge neatly?

Use the existing scalloped edge as a finished hem if the lace has one. Otherwise bind the edge narrowly or turn it under with a fine zigzag.

Does lace fray?

That depends on the construction. Firm, machine made laces hardly fray, looser qualities do. When in doubt, finish the cut edges soon after cutting.
