Jersey is knitted rather than woven. Small loops are formed that shift when pulled, so the fabric stretches across the grain and springs back again. That is exactly what makes it the standard choice for shirts, dresses, leggings and children's clothes.
The range is sorted by material and look. Cotton jersey in plain, melange, stripes, dots and stars covers everyday sewing. Viscose jersey drapes more softly and suits dresses and blouses. Ottoman shows fine crosswise ribs, punta di roma is thicker and holds its shape well enough for skirts and blazers. Panels are pre-printed sections with a finished motif.
For sewing you need a jersey needle with a rounded tip that pushes the loops aside instead of piercing them. Use a narrow zigzag or an overlocker so the seam can stretch with the fabric. For hems a twin needle works well: it looks like two parallel rows of topstitching from the outside and still remains elastic.

Which needle do I need for jersey?
A jersey needle, sometimes called a stretch needle. Its rounded tip pushes the loops aside instead of cutting the yarn. With an ordinary universal needle you can easily get small holes or skipped stitches.
Can I sew jersey without an overlocker?
Yes. A narrow zigzag or the stretch stitch on your machine is perfectly sufficient, as both give way when stretched. The edges do curl slightly but they do not fray, so finishing the edges is not essential with jersey.
What is the difference between cotton and viscose jersey?
Cotton jersey is firmer, holds its shape and is easy to care for, ideal for shirts and children's clothes. Viscose jersey drapes more softly, has a slight sheen and clings gently – the better choice for dresses, tunics and blouses.
Why does my seam turn wavy?
Usually the fabric is stretched by the presser foot while sewing. Reduce the presser foot pressure, guide the fabric without pulling, and stabilise shoulders and necklines with a stay tape that keeps the seam in shape.
