Unlike cotton jersey, performance fabric takes up hardly any moisture and passes it on instead. That keeps it from clinging during exercise and makes it dry much faster after washing.

When sewing, recovery is what counts: the fabric must not be pulled while guiding it, or the seam will ripple. A stretch stitch or an overlocker is essential, because a straight stitch snaps when stretched.

For cuffs and hems a twin needle or coverstitch works well. Simple zigzag seams also do the job, but should be tested on a scrap first.

Which stitch do I need for performance jersey?

An elastic one: narrow zigzag, stretch stitch or overlocker. A straight stitch snaps as soon as the fabric is stretched, because the thread cannot follow.

Is performance jersey suitable for swimwear?

If the fabric is finished to resist chlorine, yes. Check the details on the article; not every elastic jersey tolerates chlorine and salt water in the long run.

Why does my seam ripple?

Usually the fabric is being pulled while sewing. Just guide it and let the feed dogs do the work. A walking foot helps move both layers evenly.
