Both faces are created in one process. The outside stays smooth and presentable, while the inside is raised and holds air. That makes the fabric warmer than ordinary sweat without becoming stiff.

Because the fabric is firmer than jersey, it suits jackets with zips, gilets and hooded jumpers. Blankets can be made from it too – the fleece then lies on the inside.

When sewing, allow for the thickness: several layers add up. A jersey needle, a longer stitch and trimmed seam allowances at thick spots make the work easier.

What separates alpine fleece from winter sweat?

The inner face. Winter sweat is brushed, alpine fleece has a genuine fleece layer. Alpine fleece therefore keeps you noticeably warmer and feels thicker, while staying similarly stable.

Does alpine fleece fray at the cut edge?

Hardly, as it is a knitted fabric with a fleece face. Finishing is not essential, though it does give inner edges a neat appearance.

Is alpine fleece suitable for children's jackets?

Very much so. The fabric is warm, soft and easy to handle. It is not windproof – in a cold wind softshell is the better choice.
