The crosswise ribs are created in knitting by yarns of different thickness or alternating stitches. This makes the fabric firmer than plain jersey, falling in clear lines rather than clinging.

Because the ribs run crosswise, they emphasise width. On skirts and dresses that reads as calm and graphic; with close fitting designs, check whether this emphasis is wanted.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. When cutting, the ribs should sit at the same height at the side seams, otherwise the offset catches the eye.

How stretchy is ottoman jersey?

It stretches crosswise, but less than plain jersey, because the ribbed structure adds stability. For close fitting designs, test the stretch on the fabric first.

Do I have to align the ribs when cutting?

Yes, otherwise different heights meet at the side seams. Mark on the pattern pieces which rib the seam starts on, and it will match up.

Is ottoman suitable for jackets?

Yes, especially for unlined jackets and cardigans. The fabric has enough body for clean edges and still stays comfortable, because it gives way.
