Baumwoll Jersey Panele

A jersey panel contains a ready placed motif, usually for a front piece. You simply cut the pattern piece around the image instead of working out where the print should sit.

Panels are sold in fixed pieces whose length is stated with the article. For a complete garment you also need a companion fabric for back, sleeves and cuffing.

When cutting, mind the direction of stretch: on a panel too, the stretchy direction has to run around the body. Check before cutting whether the motif is printed accordingly.

If the print sits slightly askew, align your cut with the motif. A crooked image is immediately obvious in the finished shirt, while a minimally off grain cut hardly matters.

Good to know

Is one panel enough for a whole shirt?

Usually not. A panel generally covers the front piece; for the back, sleeves and cuffing you need additional fabric. The size given with the article helps with planning.

How do I find the right companion fabric?

Pick up a colour from the panel, ideally one that appears often in the motif. A marled or finely patterned jersey often works better than a flat solid.

What if the motif is too large for my size?

Check the motif measurements against your pattern piece before buying. If the image is too large you can trim it, as long as no important parts are lost – or choose a smaller panel.
