The weight is both advantage and drawback. On a jacket a heavy button looks well made; on a light blouse it drags the band down and distorts the edge.

Jeans buttons are a special case: they are not sewn on but hammered through the fabric. For that you need a setting tool and a firm surface.

Reinforce the spot on thin fabric. A piece of interfacing or an extra patch on the reverse stops the button pulling out or showing through.

Check for nickel free finishes where the button touches the skin. On trouser buttons the metal sits directly against the stomach, which can cause reactions on sensitive skin.

How do I attach a jeans button?

With a setting tool. The pin is pushed through the fabric from inside and the button placed on the outside, then both parts are hammered together. Practise on a scrap first.

Are metal buttons suitable for light fabrics?

Only to a degree. The weight drags the band down and distorts the edge. On blouses and thin dresses, light plastic or wooden buttons are the better choice.

Can metal buttons rust?

Simple versions can, if they stay damp for long. Dry clothing properly and look for rust free qualities on outdoor items.
