A conventional press stud is driven through the fabric with a prong. In fine jersey that can turn into a hole over time. The ring fixing spreads the pull over a larger area.

The flat profile is the second advantage. On baby bodysuits and shirts nothing presses against the skin, and under another layer the stud barely shows.

They are set with pliers and matching dies. Test the result on a scrap: the stud should sit firmly but open without tearing.

Here too, reinforcement is worthwhile on very thin fabric. A small piece of interfacing on the reverse stabilises the spot without adding bulk.

How do jersey press studs differ from ordinary ones?

The fixing. Instead of a prong piercing the fabric, a ring grips it. That spreads the pull and stops a hole forming in thin knits over time.

Are they suitable for baby clothes?

Yes, particularly so. The flat profile does not press against the skin and the ring fixing holds even in thin jersey. After setting, check both parts are firm.

Do I need special pliers?

Pliers with dies made for this type of stud. The dies match size and shape; with the wrong ones the stud sits crooked or breaks.
