Snap Fasteners

Snap fasteners close without needing a buttonhole. That makes them especially practical on children's clothes, bags, bedding and anywhere things have to be quick.

There are two kinds: sew on and hammer in. Sew on snaps need only needle and thread, hammered ones sit more firmly but require pliers or a setting tool.

Size depends on fabric thickness and strain. A large snap takes more force but also adds more bulk – on thin fabric it can show through or pull out.

On thin fabrics, reinforce the spot. A piece of interfacing or an extra patch on the reverse stops the snap tearing a hole when opened.

Test the result on a scrap of the same layers. A snap that sits too loosely will not hold; hammered too tight, it becomes hard to open.

Frequently asked questions

Sew on or hammer in?

Sew on snaps need no tools and suit light fabrics. Hammered ones sit more firmly and take more strain, but require pliers and cannot be repositioned afterwards.

How do I stop the snap pulling out?

Reinforce the spot with interfacing or an extra patch on the reverse. On thin fabric especially, that spreads the pull so the snap does not tear a hole.

Which size should I choose?

Small snaps for light fabrics and children's clothes, larger ones for jackets and bags. The thicker the fabric and the higher the strain, the larger the snap should be.
