Because plastic can be moulded, the choice is widest here. Alongside classic round buttons there are animals, hearts, stars and numbers that serve as decoration on children's clothes.

When sewing, form a shank: lay a needle or a piece of cocktail stick under the button, sew over it and wind the thread around the resulting loop.

The shank gives the button room to sit over the fabric layers. Without it the buttonhole draws in and the fastening pulls.

On children's clothes, check regularly that buttons are secure. Novelty buttons are popular, but small parts do not belong in children's hands – sew them on especially carefully.

How do I sew a button with a shank?

Lay a needle or cocktail stick between button and fabric, sew over it and pull the aid out. Then wind the thread around the loop and fasten off.

Are novelty buttons suitable for baby clothes?

Only to a degree. Small parts can come loose and be swallowed. Sew them on especially carefully, check them regularly, and for infants it is better to do without.
