Reflective Tape

Reflective tape sends headlight beams straight back to their source. Worn on a jacket, rucksack or trousers it makes the wearer visible much earlier in the dark – particularly useful on children's clothes and outdoor gear.

The effect relies on tiny glass beads or prisms in the surface. They send incoming light back instead of scattering it. The tape therefore only lights up when light falls directly on it – in darkness without headlights it stays inconspicuous.

Placement matters for the effect. Tapes on arms and legs move and therefore catch the eye more than a static area on the back. Several short strips often work better than one long one.

Stitch along both edges with matching thread. Do not sew across the tape, as every seam interrupts the reflective surface and reduces the effect.

The surface does not tolerate heat. Do not press directly on it, and do not wash finished items too hot, or the reflective particles come away over time.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my reflective tape not glow by itself?

Because it is not a light source but reflects light. It only works when a headlight or lamp shines on it. For self glowing you need luminescent material or an actual light.

Where is reflective tape best placed?

On moving parts such as sleeves and trouser legs. Movement stands out more in headlights than a static area. Several short strips all round work better than one long strip.

How do I wash clothing with reflective tape?

Cool, inside out and without tumble drying. Heat and heavy friction remove the reflective layer over time and the effect fades. Never press directly on the tape.
