Streifenbänder

Striped tapes are the quickest route to a sporty look. Set on a side seam they turn plain trousers into joggers with a side stripe – and they do the same for jackets, skirts and bags.

The tapes are usually woven, more rarely elastic. For jersey and sweat an elastic quality is worthwhile, as a firm tape blocks the stretch of the seam and can get in the way when dressing.

Stitch along both edges close to the border. Sew both sides in the same direction, or the tape distorts between the seams and ripples.

Where the tape runs over a side seam, press the seam allowances open or flatten them first. Otherwise a ridge forms under the tape and shows through.

Pre washing is worthwhile if the finished piece will be washed hot. Tape and fabric then behave the same later and the seam stays flat.

Which tape should I use for joggers?

Ideally an elastic one, because the side seam has to give with jersey and sweat. A firm tape blocks the stretch and can pull uncomfortably when dressing, or even tear.

How do I avoid ripples under the tape?

Sew both long sides in the same direction and guide the tape without tension. Also flatten the seam allowances underneath so no ridge forms and shows through.

Can I use striped tapes on bags too?

Yes, very well. A stripe across the front or along the base gives a plain bag structure. There you can happily use a firm tape, as nothing needs to stretch.
