Webbing is made to carry weight. It is densely woven, strong and barely stretches – the basis for bag handles, rucksack straps, lanyards, dog leads and belts.

Width determines both the load it can take and which buckles fit. Narrow tapes suit light bags and lanyards, wide ones rucksacks and heavy shopping bags.
In terms of material, the main distinction is between cotton and polypropylene. Cotton feels softer and takes colour beautifully, synthetic fibre is stronger, dries faster and abrades less.
Sew with a strong needle and a longer stitch. At fixing points, box stitching has proved itself: a rectangle with a cross inside it, spreading the load over a larger area.
The ends fray. With synthetic fibre, seal them with a flame; with cotton, fold them over and stitch so the tape does not unravel.

Which width do I need for bag handles?
Narrow tapes are enough for light bags, wide ones are more comfortable on heavily loaded bags, as they do not cut into the hand. Make sure buckles and rings match the width.
How do I attach webbing so it holds?
With a box stitch: sew a rectangle and add a diagonal cross inside. That spreads the pull over the whole area instead of a single seam.
Cotton or synthetic?
Cotton feels more pleasant and looks more natural. Polypropylene is stronger, dries quickly and suits outdoor use and anything that may get wet.
