Webbing 40 mm

Forty millimetres is the widest common webbing width. It spreads pressure over a large area and therefore suits rucksack straps, heavy shopping bags, belts and carrying systems.

The wider the tape, the less it cuts in. With heavy loads that is the decisive point – a narrow tape digs into the shoulder, while a wide one distributes the same weight noticeably better.

The price is bulk. At seams, folds and buckles, wide webbing adds considerable thickness, which can look out of proportion on small bags.

Buckles and rings must match the width and be correspondingly strong. For load bearing joints, metal is the safer choice, as plastic can give way under constant strain.

Sew load bearing points with a box stitch and strong thread. With thick layers, work slowly and change the needle beforehand so it does not break.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need 40 mm webbing?

For heavy loads: rucksack straps, large shopping bags, carrying systems. The wide surface spreads the pressure so the tape does not cut into the shoulder.

Is wider webbing always better?

No. On small bags it looks out of proportion and adds a lot of bulk at seams. Choose the width by load and project size, not by the maximum available.

Which buckles do I need?

Ones of the same width and with a suitable load rating. For load bearing joints metal is safer, as plastic buckles can give way or break under constant strain.
