Twenty millimetres is the narrowest common webbing width. It adds little bulk and suits lanyards, light bags, leads for small dogs and anything where a wide tape would look clumsy.

With a narrow tape the load spreads over less surface. You notice that when carrying: a heavily loaded bag cuts into the hand far more at twenty millimetres than at forty.

In return the tape is easier to work with. It passes through small rings and buckles, folds neatly and adds hardly any bulk at seams.

Buy buckles and snap hooks in the same width. A tape that sits too loosely in a buckle slips under load and the adjustment will not hold.

Sew with a strong needle and a longer stitch. At load bearing points, use a box stitch so the pull is distributed.

What is 20 mm webbing enough for?

Lanyards, pencil cases, light bags and leads for small dogs. On heavily loaded bags the narrow tape cuts into the hand – wider qualities are more comfortable there.

Do all buckles fit 20 mm webbing?

No, buckles are made for one width. Buy hardware with the same measurement, or the tape sits too loosely and slips out of the adjustment under load.

How do I stop the ends fraying?

With synthetic fibre, melt the end briefly with a flame; with cotton, fold it over and stitch. Both stop the tape unravelling over time.
