Sequin Trim

Sequin trims carry small shimmering discs on a narrow tape. They set a clear accent on costumes, occasion wear, bags and decoration – wherever something should sparkle.

The discs are stitched on, usually to an elastic or woven tape. That lets the trim follow slightly curved edges without the sequins lifting.

When sewing, sequins blunt needles quickly. Stitch beside the discs where possible and change the needle as soon as it catches or the stitching turns untidy.

For pressing, always use a cloth in between and work at low temperature. Sequins are made of plastic and distort under direct heat.

Where the trim touches the skin, back it with a soft tape. The edges of the discs can rub, which becomes uncomfortable over several hours in a costume.

Frequently asked questions

How do I attach sequin trim without damaging the needle?

Run the seam beside the discs rather than over them. A zipper foot helps, as it positions the needle closer to the edge.

Can I press the trim?

Only with a cloth in between and at low temperature. Direct heat melts or buckles the plastic discs, and that cannot be undone.

Is the trim washable?

Gently and cold, ideally in a laundry bag. Friction in the machine can loosen discs; for elaborate costumes, hand washing is the safer choice.
