How do I keep the edge sharp?
Use it for one material only and store it dry. Cutting paper or tape with it shows after just a few metres of fabric and calls for resharpening.
Do I need a cutting mat?
With rotary cutters, yes, otherwise the blade runs into the table. The mat closes up again after each cut and lasts a long time when stored flat.
How do I cut straight?
With a ruler and a firm surface rather than freehand. The fabric lies flat and without tension; even a slight ripple under the blade pulls the cut askew.
When should a blade be changed?
As soon as it leaves threads standing or asks for more pressure than before. A blunt blade drags at the fabric instead of parting it, and the cut edge shows it.
