At this thickness the cord is no longer a discreet aid but a visible part of the design. On a bag it replaces webbing, on a curtain it becomes ornament.

For drawstrings it is usually too thick. Channels and eyelets would have to be very large, and the cord would bulk up inside the fabric rather than lying flat.

Sewing it needs a strong needle and patience. It is often easier to attach the cord with end caps or knots than to feed it through the machine.

In macramé this size is popular because knots show clearly. Allow plenty of material – knots use a multiple of the visible length.

Is 10 mm suitable for drawstrings?

Usually not. The channel would have to be very wide and the cord would bulk up inside the fabric. For drawstrings, five millimetres is the more practical choice.

How do I attach such a thick cord?

Best with end caps, knots or loops sewn by hand. Feeding this thickness through a machine is difficult without risking the needle.

How much material do I need for macramé?

Considerably more than the finished length – knots use a multiple. As a rough rule many people allow four to eight times the planned length.
