An all purpose polyester thread suits almost every fabric: it is tear resistant, slightly stretchy and runs in any domestic machine. For thick fabrics such as denim there are stronger qualities that stand up to the greater strain.
Alongside them are speciality threads: elastic thread contracts and is used for gathering and shirring, buttonhole thread is especially strong, and metallic thread adds shine to decorative stitching and embroidery. Tacking thread tears easily and can be removed without trouble afterwards.
Use the same thread for the needle and the bobbin. Different threads behave differently under tension and lead to an uneven stitch.

Which thread suits which fabric?
An all purpose polyester thread covers nearly everything, from cotton to jersey. For denim and thick fabrics a stronger thread is worthwhile, and for gathering an elastic thread that contracts.
Do the needle and bobbin threads have to match?
Yes, that is recommended. Different thicknesses or materials behave differently under tension, which causes loops on one side and an untidy stitch.
What is tacking thread for?
For holding pieces together temporarily. It tears easily and can be pulled out without effort after the final seam, leaving no marks in the fabric.
